Solino is the first and only imported coffee that is not only grown and harvested, but also roasted in Ethiopia. This helps the country to benefit from more of the value adding process involved in coffee production.
Usually, European coffee producers buy green coffee from developing countries. The roasting, packaging and marketing of the coffee is done in Europe. Developing countries, acting only as raw material suppliers are excluded from the value adding process.
This initiative does more to help Ethiopia than well-known “fair – trade” programs which only guarantee slightly higher salaries for coffee farmers. Purchasing this coffee helps to create more qualified jobs in Ethiopia and helps the country benefit through greater inclusion in the value adding process.
Finally, roasting reduces the weight of the coffee by 25% meaning that less must be transported to Europe and in effect, CO2 emissions are reduced.
